The trombone section has changed dramatically in size, age and most importantly ability over the many years the Brentwood School Big Band has performed all over the world. The trombone section has continued to entertain despite any problem or crisis, at times when music has been lost in nearby trees, instruments locked in cases and the absence of many of the section's members. The section really has battled "Against All Odds" which incidentally is the title of one of the band's recent CDs.
The trombone section is, quite frankly, in its prime at the moment. The band contains the best musicians within the school and at the moment the section consists of four sublime trombonists and has recently benefitted from the addition of an outstanding French Horn player. (The webmaster and director point out that this article expresses views to which not all remaining band members would subscribe)
Matthew Lewis - Principal Trombonist - Joined the Big Band at a young age and has continued to stun us all over all the years he has been in the school with his extraordinary range of playing and his improvisation ability. He has recently joined some of the world's finest youth orchestras which only furthers his ability. A true asset to the band!
Lewis Gaston - Vice Principal Trombonist - Lewis followed in the footsteps of his elder brother, a former principal trombonist, until he left the school and Lewis' apprenticeship days came to an end. Lewis took over the place of Trombone 2 and his ability has grown at an outstanding rate. Lewis is a sure section leader in the making (says Lewis)
Amy Lincoln - Trombone 3 - Amy only joined Brentwood School in September 06 and was introduced into the Big Band as soon as her potential was realised. She is the sister of a previous vocalist and percussionist. Amy currently represents Trombone 3 but in order for her to gain the maximum experience of her two years she will have in the Big Band she is keen to play the more challenging trombone parts.
Charlotte Lewis - French Horn - During the many years of the band's existence there have been periods when we have benefited from the sound of French Horns in our timbre; once again we have this instrument in our ranks. Charlotte and her French horn provide an excellent balance within the band and she sits along side the trombone section. Charlotte is also a member of world respected orchestras and has a wide musical experience outside of school.
Michael Webb - Trombone 4 - Michael has only recently joined the band and has shown enormous potential already. The band has recently lost its Bass Trombonist of long standing and Michael has temporarily taken up the place of Trombone 4 in order to keep the balance within the section. He will undoubtedly grow to be a successful trombonist and a key player within the band.
Our newest trombonist is 11 year old Iain Stewart, who will hopefully be a leader of the BB of 2013 – by which time the BB will be celebrating 30 years of existence!
