| The sax Section |
The Saxes by Ryan Sees Here we are at the turn of a new year, with a totally new sax section. Our leader, Ben Clark, has gone to Durham University, leaving behind some very large shoes, but Mr. Pickthall had, as always, a plan of how to replace him. I think this year, if we reach our full potential, we could blow away many an audience. The saxophone is quite a tough instrument. It requires dedication and practice, and excellent control of the tongue, mouth, jaw, throat and even stomach! Despite this, all our saxophonists seem to have no problem with whatever music Mr. Pickthall asks us to play, making us the best school Big Band for miles around. Tim Sentance - Principal Alto Saxophone and Leader of the Brentwood School Big Band: In the absence of Ben, Tim has taken up his role as leader. His sax playing is unrivalled and he will surely lead us through another year of prosperity. Rachel Farrant - Vice-Principal Alto Saxophone: Rachel started up the saxophone in the start of 2005 and by September had already joined us. She is an invaluable contribution to the section and a future leader in the making. Penny Ward - 2nd Alto Saxophone: Penny is one of our most experienced performers. She has been all around the globe with us and it will be a great shame to lose her next year. Liam Taylor – 2nd Alto Saxophone and Vice-Principal Clarinet: Liam has been with the big band for quite some time now. He started off as a timid sax player, but his skills have flourished over the last couple of years until he has become quite the performer. He always has a smile and is a great pleasure to be around. Charlie Jackson – 2nd Alto Saxophone Charlie is one of those players for whom the Big Band is almost a way of life, and now he rocks everybodies lives in the band with his amazing talents in sax, he is the sax bomb. (Said Charlie) Alex Quigley – 2nd Alto Saxophone: Alex joined the band at Easter last year when his sax was almost the same size as him! Since then he has developed bags of confidence and will some day be one of our greatest players, with maybe a transfer to tenor in the future. Eleanor Law – 2nd Alto Saxophone: Eleanor only joined us in September 2006, but has already left her mark and has already played her first concert. Good luck Eleanor! Tom Harries – 2nd Alto Saxophone: Tom again, only joined us in September 2006. Shy at first, but his confidence is already growing with the encouragement of those around him. Adrian Gilder – Principal Tenor Saxophone and Principal Flute: Adrian is not only an outstanding Tenor saxophone leader, with an amazing talent for the blues, but his jazz flute playing is unmatched. He is the oldest and most experienced performer in the section, and can fix any sax-related problem within minutes of the start of a concert! Ryan Sees – Principal Clarinet, Vice-Principal Baritone Saxophone and Vice-Principal Tenor Saxophone: Ryan took up the saxophone in December of 2002, and by June 2003 had already joined the Big Band. Since then he has taken a shine for the baritone saxophone – the big brother of the tenor. He is an excellent player, with plenty of experience, and is a definite candidate for leader in the future. Jessica Taylor – 2nd Tenor Saxophone and Female Vocalist: Jessica is a confident player with a great aptitude for the saxophone, and who has played in many other bands and orchestras. She is also a stunning female vocalist and a valuable part of the sax section. Jonathan Cooke – Principal Baritone Saxophone and Vice-Principal Flute: John started the tenor saxophone a couple of years and has developed his performing skills tremendously. He also has an aptitude for the baritone, and plays our newly-refurbished instrument on every opportunity he can.
